Types of Legacies

Pecuniary Bequest

A gift of a fixed sum of money in your Will is called a pecuniary bequest. The value of pecuniary legacies will decrease over time, as the cost of living increases.

Specific Bequest

A particular named item is left as a gift in your Will, for example, a piece of jewelry or stable equipment.

A Residuary Bequest

A gift of the remainder of the estate after all other bequests have been made and debts are cleared.

A Reversionary Bequest

A gift in your Will that depends upon the occurrence of an event which may or may not happen. For example, a bequest to a charity, such as The Conquest Centre for disabled riding which applies only if all other beneficiaries named in the Will die before the testator (the person named in the Will).

A Codicil

An amendment to an existing will, rather than creating a new one, which allows for the provision of a simple bequest of a specific amount.

For future guidance on leaving a legacy gift to a charity there is additional information at Remember a charity Organisation.
